Los Angeles-born saxophonist Kamasi Washington and trombonist Ryan Porter co-founded West Coast Get Down – a musical collective fusing jazz and funk with hip-hop. It is partly because of this collective that jazz saw a resurgence in Los Angeles, subtly eclipsing the long-established jazz mecca of the world, New York City. The two musicians join forces and take the vibes of Los Angeles to jazz club BIRD in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
Charles Gayle was born in the United States. Gayle came to prominence in the 1990s after a few decades of obscurity, resulting from him living as a homeless man playing in New York City's streets and subways. Although the saxophone is his main instrument, free-jazz man Gayle also plays the piano, bass clarinet, bass, and percussion instrument. Together with Manolo Cabras on bass and Giovanni Barcella on drums, Charles Gayle performs at The MotorMusic Jazz Sessions.
Pianist Kenny Barron's June 27, 2019 appearance at the Alfa Jazz Festival in Ukraine's Lviv was a celebration of sublime jazz virtuosity. The revered elder statesmen of jazz piano brought his regular working trio of Kiyoshi Kitagawa (bass) and Jonathan Blake (drums), augmented by stellar jazzman Marcus Strickland (tenor saxophone) and young lion Riley Mulherkar (trumpet). The Newport Jazz Festival, first established in the North-American town of Newport, Rhode Island in the summer of 1954, has now grown to become one of the largest multi-day celebrations of jazz worldwide. It has resulted in numerous famous live albums from top-rate jazz stars, and has spawned several worldwide tours, including editions of the Newport Jazz Festival in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. In October 1972, an outstanding lineup played shoulder-to-shoulder at the 7th Newport Jazz Festival held in Rotterdam's then-recently built concert venue De Doelen. These four masterful groups consisted of alto saxophonist "Cannonball" Adderley and his quintet (Nat Adderley on cornet, George Duke on keyboards, Walter Booker on bass, and Roy McCurdy on drums), Hammond organist Jimmy Smith and his band (Art Farmer on flugelhorn, Illinois Jacquet on tenor saxophone, Kenny Burrell on guitar, Clark Terry on trumpet, and Roy Haynes on drums), pianist Dave Brubeck and his trio (Jack Six on bass, Alan Dawson on drums) with accompaniment from Paul Desmond on alto saxophone and Gerry Mulligan on baritone saxophone, and bassist Charles Mingus and his group (Joe Gardner on trumpet, Hamiet Bluiett on baritone saxophone, John Foster on piano, Roy Brooks on drums) with the great high-note trumpeter Cat Anderson as a guest.

This vintage program, ‘Jazz Marmalade', shows expatriate American musicians plying their trade in two Parisian jazz clubs in 1962. First, American stride pianist Joe Turner (often confused with blues shouter ‘Big' Joe Turner) opens this atmospheric broadcast with a swinging piano-bass duet recorded at the Mars Club. Joe Turner (1907–1990) would remain in Paris for the rest of his life. From the American-owned Mars Club just off the Champs-Élysées, a hangout for showbiz people and expatriate Americans in Paris, the program cuts to the Blue Note. There, a Paris-based American quartet that includes drummer Kenny Clarke, organ player Lou Bennett, and tenor saxophonist Don Byas performs ‘Salut Les Copines'. Returning to the Mars Club, the American jazz trio of house pianist Art Simmons (1926–2018) performs a jaunty take on ‘C-Jam Blues'. Rounding off the program at the Blue Note, the quartet of drummer Kenny Clarke, organist Lou Bennett, and tenor saxophonist Don Byas returns for a swinging ‘April in Paris'. These recordings offer an invaluable glimpse into expatriate American jazz-making in Paris in the early 1960s.
In 2019, the vibrant city of Sofia, Bulgaria, hosted the International A to JazZ Festival. Among the featured acts was the trailblazing jazz trumpeter Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah. This genre-defying artist captivated the audience with his eclectic “stretch music” an approach that incorporates hip-hop and reaches back through the American canon into African percussion and its rich melodic content.
