With his signature vocal hiccup and hits like "That'll Be the Day," "Rave On," "Peggy Sue" and "Not Fade Away," Buddy Holly was a rock & roll pioneer, as well as one of the genre's first great singer-songwriters. He used the recording studio for doubletracking and other advanced techniques, and popularized the two guitars, bass, and drums lineup. Holly's playful, mock-ingenuous singing, with slides between falsetto and regular voice, was a major influence on Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, and numerous imitators. When he died in an airplane crash at 22, he had been recording for less than two years.

The origins of the British Rhythm & Blues were in the jazz, skiffle and folk movements of the 1950s. Chris Barber was one its early figures helping establish the Marquee Club, the key venue for British R&B bands. The 1958 visit of Muddy Waters influenced Blues Incorporated, with other bands emerging including the Animals from Newcastle, the Spencer Davies Group and the Yardbirds from London. British RnB had a harder edge born of black American blues with a gritty, syncopated sound and guitar-heavy mix.

The Chicago Blues sound replaced acoustic instruments with amplified versions and the basic guitar/harmonica duo of Delta Blues and Piedmont blues was expanded into a full band with bass guitar, drums, and sometimes saxophone. It was more full-bodied than its country cousin, reaching beyond the standard six-note blues scale to incorporate major scale notes. With Bo Diddley, Howlin Woolf & Muddy Waters

Its foundations are firmly in rock and roll and infused a variety of musical genres of the time. America was fighting the Vietnam War, protests across the country were widespread. It was during this period of unrest that the driving force behind artists such as Boston, REO Speedwagon, Styx and many others were formed.

Where the California sound began, was in the music of the surf. It was seen as glamorous and aspirational. Surf, sun, and beach. This is what California brought to the rest of the United States. From 1965 to 1967, ‘68, was a very magical period in California, and that's where the California sound came from.

British singer/songwriter Elvis Costello extended the lyrical range of punk and new wave music with songs like "Alison," "Everyday I Write the Book" and "Veronica." Leading music critics cast fresh light on the career of the Eagles.

Fronted by Eric Clapton, Cream was the prototypical power trio, playing a mix of blues, rock and psychedelia while focusing on chunky riffs and fiery guitar solos. In a mere three years, the band sold 15 million records, played to SRO crowds throughout the U.S. and Europe, and redefined the instrumentalist's role in rock.

The Monterey Pop Festival was organised in just seven weeks by producer, Lou Adler, with John Phillips from the Mamas and the Papas. And it's really the first time such a large music event is put on. It's part of the 1967 Summer of Love, the culmination of this counter-culture movement, the hippy child ideal. And it really becomes a kind of turning point for the music industry in terms of these big live events.

The British Invasion was massive. America, for a brief period, and one that really hasn't been repeated, went crazy for all things British. It was youthful excitement, Swinging Sixties, and it was through the music that you got the access. The incredible success of the Beatles led to record companies encouraging more of the same. They wanted to emulate that success with more British bands crossing over the Atlantic and having that huge impression on the culture there. A lot of these British bands came from post-war austerity. America looked so glamorous. It wasn't just that the sun of California and the bustle of New York… it was a really successful open place where they felt like anybody could succeed. And because America wanted them to succeed, everybody was a winner.
