The designers are tasked with the Unconventional Materials Challenge. Two of Project Runway's favorite challenges, the flower store and the hardware store, are combined for the ultimate “hard and soft” challenge. Also, the teams get a bit of a shake-up when two members leave one team and one member leaves another. The legendary Bette Midler serves as a guest judge.

The teams also must direct a fashion shoot for their collection, which is also part of the criteria they are judged on for this challenge.

For the Michael Kors Challenge, the designers are tasked with making an outfit for a woman on the go—something chic and stylish but wearable enough to last throughout the entire day. Also, the designers are left in a state of confusion as two of their fellow competitors abruptly decide to leave Project Runway.

The designers are broken into teams of two, where they are tasked to design a red carpet look to be worn at the Emmys. Each team is assigned a client to design for, and this client is one of several past contestants on Project Runway. Each outfit is also inspired by a different color Lexus, which serves as their mode of transportation in the beginning of this episode.
