When Lance is cast as the star in the new remake of the classic movie “Ned Knightly and the Golden Castle” he doesn't anticipate Jestro and his monsters invading the set and ruining his starring role. It's movie time! Lance does something very Lance: he agrees to star in a movie about remake of a classic film in Knighton: “The Golden Castle.” While pillaging a village, Jestro and the Book of Monsters see a movie poster for “The Golden Castle” and the book says the legendary Golden Castle is filled with riches! Jestro explains that it's just a dumb movie and that it's not real. It's all based on a “script.” The Book, who's been shelved for many years, wants to eat the movie script to learn more about the modern world. On the set of the movie, Lance has invited the other Knights to act as extras. When they see how Lance is being portrayed, they're incensed. When Jestro attacks the movie set to get the script for his book to eat, the film director keeps rolling. This battle footage is fantastic! The Knights defeat Jestro even though the movie set is trashed. The director will make it work. At the premier of the movie, Lance is embarrassed to see that he's been reduced to comic relief for the realm's bravest Knight…Macy! The director has now made her a star.

Using the Book of Fear, Jestro calls forth Whipperella and uses her to trap the knights in the dark woods where they realize their darkest fears. Searching through the dark forests of the realm, Jestro finds “The Book of Fear.” It's pretty scary. But he feeds it to the book of Book of Monsters, and he uses it to call forth WHIPPERELLA, a monster that can induce fear. One-by-one she uses her “knighmarish” power on the knights and they experiences their own worst fears. Clay fears not living up to the Knights' Code. Lance fears being a nobody. Macy fears never being a knight and Axl fears having no food. Aaron must take the lead because he's fearless he does everything with reckless abandon. It's not until he leads the group out of the forest – as they fight off the Whipperella – that they we find out Aaron's true fear – the fear of peace and quiet and no more challenges or high energy escapades.

When our heroes are invited back to Darkly's Boarding School, they discover it's a trap set up by Lord Garmadon and his evil replica ninjas created by Garmadon's new Mega-Weapo. Realizing how to correctly wield the Mega-Weapon, Lord Garmadon creates evil replicas of the Ninja to face off with our heroes. Meanwhile, Lloyd and the Ninja are invited back the Darkly's Boarding School, only to discover it's a trap and now the bad kids have seized control of the school. With the Ninja trapped in the school with the faculty, things spiral out of control as the Evil Replica Ninja arrive. As an awesome battle takes place in the school halls, the Ninja manage to outsmart their evil versions, and warn Lord Garmadon they're ready for whatever else he throws at them.

When Garmadon by accident brings to life the original owners of the Black Bounty – the ruthless Captain Soto and his Pirates - it is up to our ninjas to stop them from plundering Ninjago City. Sharing a tiny, one-bedroom apartment in the city, the Ninja take Lloyd to Grand Sensei Darreth's Mojo Dojo to begin training. There, they discover Lloyd has all four of their natural elemental abilities. Meanwhile, Lord Garmadon discovers his Mega-Weapon can't destroy, only create what the user wishes. By accident, Garmadon brings to life the original owners of the Black Bounty: Captain Soto and his Pirates, and they mutiny the ship. Answering the age-old question of who would win a fight between pirates and ninja, it's up to our ninja to stop Captain Soto and his men from plundering Ninjago City. In the end, Ninjago City is saved, the Pirates are arrested and Lord Garmadon escapes once again with their Black Bounty.

He discovers to his surprise, however, that the masked intruder is none other than the princess herself, who is not quite as docile or meek as she pretends. She has a habit of sneaking out of her chambers at night to feed the homeless who surround the Imperial Palace. This revelation only endears her to Lloyd more and Harumi and Lloyd quickly strike up a friendship. Unfortunately, trouble catches up to the ninja when the Sons Of Garmadon target the second Oni mask and attack the palace. The scope of the attack proves more than the Ninja were prepared for as the Sons of Garmadon detonate a series of subterranean bombs, bringing down part of the palace. Lloyd and Harumi escape onto the flying ship, DESTINY'S BOUNTY. But the victory is a pyrrhic one. The second Oni Mask has been stolen and Harumi's parents and Master Hutchins are feared lost.
