The Monty Alexander Trio

The Monty Alexander Trio

The North Sea Jazz Festival is the largest indoor music festival in the world, known globally as the event where the past, present and future of jazz are featured within three days. Next to a firm base of jazz as the festival's staple music genre, many others, such as blues, soul, funk, or hip hop, pass by. On July 13, 1979, talented Jamaican pianist Monty Alexander was joined by Reggie Johnson (bass), Frank Gant (drums), Bobby Thomas (hand drum), and Othello Molineaux (steel drum) at the North Sea Jazz Festival in The Hague. Alexander's Caribbean influences and natural flair for the piano shine through in this brilliant performance.

Dionne Warwick

Dionne Warwick

Dionne Warwick's vocal artistry ranges from voluminous deep register to soft, fragile high notes. She masters the entire range with almost unnerving ease. But more than her strong, warm voice, Dionne's magic is in the silky elegance and the secure delivery with which she tells a story. That's how her, along with composer Burt Bacharach and lyricist Hal David become pioneers of the brand of pop music called “Middle of the Road”, meaning pop that is grippingly simple, but never trite. Sixty of her hits made it into the American charts and sold over 100 million albums worldwide. This amazing 1964 recording from the 27 Club in Knokke, Belgium showcases the 23-year-old star vocalist at the start of her career.

As a 25-year-old saxophonist, Maceo Parker played in the band of James Brown, but he is also known for his collaborations with George Clinton's Parliament-Funkadelic and Bootsy Collins' Rubber Band. Maceo has proven his star quality by creating a special chemistry between all the different styles of American black music. As a pioneer in the ‘groove', he blends funky jazz with roots and blues with gospel. The result? Overheated concert halls, with enthusiastic audiences that completely surrender themselves to the music's boundless energy.

Since 1977, Estival is a summer jazz festival in Switzerland, Lugano. Estival offers a thrilling and particularly surprising line-up that explores the rich world of contemporary music whilst promoting the understanding of different cultures, tolerance, and co-existence. John Carl Hendricks is one of the instigators of "vocalese", an art form that aims to add lyrics to existing instrumental pieces and replace several instruments with singing. He flaunts this technique at Estival, where he "scat" while playing double bass. Hendricks is known for his mastery of scat, a form of vocal jazz that uses onomatopoeia rather than lyrics

Jo Jones & Milt Buckner

Jo Jones & Milt Buckner

In early September 1969, the duo of American drummer ‘Papa' Jo Jones (1911–1985) and American organist Milt Buckner (1915–1977) played a string of jazz concerts in Switzerland. Jo Jones, who pioneered playing timekeeping rhythms on a cymbal rather than the bass drum, became renowned in the 1930s in the Count Basie Orchestra. Milt Buckner rose to prominence as a pianist in the Lionel Hampton Orchestra in the 1940s, yet devoted himself to the organ in the 1950s. Swiss actor Jean Landier welcomed the two musicians to the Radio Télévision Suisse program ‘Variétés: Jasons Jazz' for a short interview, followed by performances of ‘Hamp's Boogie Woogie', ‘Georgia Mae', ‘Tea For Two', and ‘Flying Home'.

Avishai Cohen

Double bassist Avishai Cohen's trio with Noam David (drums) and Omri Mor (pianist) joined forces with the international Symphony Orchestra ‘INSO-Lviv', conducted by Christian Schumann. On June 24, 2017 they brought Avishai Cohen's signature blend of influences from Eastern Europe, American jazz and the Middle East to the Alfa Jazz Festival in Lviv, Ukraine. Cohen, who also supplies vocalizations in the Judeo-Spanish dialect Ladino, came to prominence internationally in the 1990s when jazz great Chick Corea offered him a place in his trio and a recording deal. Thirty years later, Cohen has become a house-hold name himself, leaving his Ukrainian audience enthralled and connected through the universal language of music.

Thelonious Monk, Charlie Rouse, Ben Riley & Larry Gales

Thelonious Monk, Charlie Rouse, Ben Riley & Larry Gales

The idiosyncratic pianist and composer Thelonious Monk (1917-1982) is one of the all-time greats of jazz. His music went largely misunderstood for the first 15 years of his career, after which he was rightly hailed as a genius, and received credit as a founding father of bebop. Several concerts from his 1966 European tour were recorded for television, featuring his quartet of Charles Rouse (tenor saxophone), Lawrence Gales (bass) and Benjamin Riley (drums). His quartet performed Epistrophy, 'Round Midnight, and Lulu's Back in Town in Warsaw for Polish television on April 4, 1966. On April 17, the same quartet performed a short set in Copenhagen for Danish television, featuring Lulu's Back in Town, Don't Blame Me, and Epistrophy.

‘Jazz a Vienne' is one of the world's most prestigious jazz festivals. Ever since 1981 it has attracted leading jazz artists, with many of them playing return engagements. Unsurprisingly, the festival's 2013 edition did not fall short of expectations: the lineup was filled with the biggest names in music. Among them was Jose James. He was discovered by the legendary DJ and radio broadcaster Gilles Peterson. Joined on stage by Takuya Kuroda on trumpet, Solomon Dorsey on bass, Kris Bowers on keys, and Richard Spaven on drums, the singer is one of the prime examples of the direction jazz is heading towards.

Next to a firm base of jazz as the festival's staple music genre, many others, such as blues, soul, funk, or hip hop, pass by. In 1982, American saxophonist Gerry Mulligan gave an unforgettable performance at the North Sea Jazz Festival in The Hague. Mulligan was one of the leading arrangers of the cool jazz era, who worked with Miles Davis, Stan Kenton and Claude Thornhill in the 1950s and 1960s. Mulligan's early pianoless 1950s quartet with trumpeter Chet Baker is still regarded as one of the finest groups in cool jazz. Born in New York in 1927, Mulligan spent his life composing, arranging and playing jazz until his death on January 20, 1996.
