Told that the Sheffields will celebrate Christmas one day early, Fran is further disappointed to find that Maxwell farms out all of his gift buying to a personal shopper. So, upon finding that the children don't believe in Santa and that what Grace really wants is to have her father home on Christmas, Fran decides to have a talk with Maxwell -- until Niles points out that he is preparing the staff s Christmas bonuses. Revealing that C.C. will also be joining him in Washington but insisting that their trip will be all business, Maxwell is nonetheless persuaded to do his own shopping for a change. So, when Fran relies on Niles' assessment of her bonus and buys the children some expensive gifts, she discovers that, instead of money, Maxwell bought her a beautiful vase. Faced with having to either take back her gifts or somehow pay the bill, Fran declines Niles' offer of a loan and goes to see Val's Uncle Paulie to pawn the vase. But, when Maxwell mentions it later, Fran guiltily rushes to buy it back and, forced to pay twice what she got, sells her grandmother's watch instead. Receiving a call from Niles with word about Fran and the watch, Maxwell decides to make things right. So, leaving C.C. behind at the airport, he intercepts the family at St. Patrick's Cathedral and finds Fran in a confessional seeking help with her financial difficulties. Finally, after returning the watch and then accidentally sitting on the vase, Maxwell ends up at the hospital being treated for his wounds, while Grace gets her wish and renews her belief in Santa Claus.
