Gary Burton & Makoto Ozone

'Münchner Klaviersommer' was an annual concerts series that took place from 1981 to 1998 in Munich, Germany. Although the festival's name suggests a strong focus on piano music, it featured countless famous musicians from jazz and classical music – not just pianists. The concerts were usually held in July at The Gasteig, home of the Munich Philharmonic. In 1995, vibraphonist Gary Burton and pianist Makoto Ozone, both great jazz players noted for their virtuoso technique and innovative style, came together to give a concert of improvised music. They delighted the audience with their fluid, poetic artistry, which was expressed in a performance of the highest order.

Salif Keita, Souleymane Dournbia, Lansine Kouyate & N'Doumbé

Salif Keita, Souleymane Dournbia, Lansine Kouyate & N'Doumbé

Salif Keita's music is a rich combination of traditional Malian music with European and American influences. We can hear this in the instrumentation of Keita's music, which varies from traditional West-African instruments to Western European ones. The Malian singer was cast out by his family because of his albinism. In 1967 he moved to Bamako, where he started his musical career and joined Les Ambassadeurs (Internationaux). He achieved international acknowledgement with this band in the 1970s. After spending a couple of years in Ivory Coast, Salif has found his home base in Paris since 1984. During this 2010 concert, he proves to be rightfully referred to as “The Golden Voice of Africa”.

Archie Shepp All Star

Archie Shepp All Star

In 1960, Archie Shepp attended a concert of John Coltrane at the Five Spot, legendary club of the Lower East Side. Fascinated, he quickly decided to devote himself to the tenor saxophone. Five years later, Shepp - already a staple of free jazz - finally recorded alongside his idol. The result, published in 1966, is called Ascension and still remains today a symbol of free improvisation. At the edge of the fiftieth anniversary of Coltrane's death, gone at forty, the most Parisian of the New York avant-garde celebrates the legacy of the great composer of A Love Supreme with a dazzling French-American all-star who is reminiscent in some respects of the heretic Ascension orchestra. When a giant pays tribute to a god of jazz...

Jo Jones & Milt Buckner

Jo Jones & Milt Buckner

In early September 1969, the duo of American drummer ‘Papa' Jo Jones (1911–1985) and American organist Milt Buckner (1915–1977) played a string of jazz concerts in Switzerland. Jo Jones, who pioneered playing timekeeping rhythms on a cymbal rather than the bass drum, became renowned in the 1930s in the Count Basie Orchestra. Milt Buckner rose to prominence as a pianist in the Lionel Hampton Orchestra in the 1940s, yet devoted himself to the organ in the 1950s. Swiss actor Jean Landier welcomed the two musicians to the Radio Télévision Suisse program ‘Variétés: Jasons Jazz' for a short interview, followed by performances of ‘Hamp's Boogie Woogie', ‘Georgia Mae', ‘Tea For Two', and ‘Flying Home'.
