The Tops and the Roots

There was a village and a man, living in this village. In a deep forest near that village, the Bear settled in. The Bear asked the man for some tasty treats. The man gave the Bear two options of what he prefers to eat: the tops or the roots. The Bear decided to take the tops. The man grew a turnip and gave the tops to the Bear. The tops were tasteless. The Bear asked the man to try the turnip. The man agreed on the condition that the Bear will help him with the housework and keep off the flies. While chasing away the flies, the Bear accidentally hit the man on the nose. The Bear was scared and ran away into the forest, grabbing the turnip with him. Since then, people use to say “to be a fool for one's pains”.
