Iván Fischer leads his Budapest Festival Orchestra (BFO) in a concert program dedicated to the music of Ludwig van Beethoven. The program opens with the composer's Symphony No. 1 in C major, Op. 21. Afterward, Fischer conducts Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 in G major, Op. 58, in which Richard Goode features as the soloist. The acclaimed American pianist (1943) is known for his interpretations of the Beethoven repertoire. Goode recorded all five Beethoven piano concertos with the BFO and Fischer, earning him exceptional critical acclaim and a Grammy Award nomination. As an encore, Goode performs the Sarabande from J. S. Bach's Partita in B-flat major, BWV 825. The program closes with Beethoven's famous Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Op. 67. In this splendid concert, exceptional Russian pianists Nikolay Lugansky and Vadim Rudenko join forces in a program for two pianos comprising works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Maurice Ravel, Anton Arensky, Sergei Rachmaninoff, and Nikolai Kapustin. Both pianists, laureates of the prestigious International Tchaikovsky Competition in 1994, have received international recognition. They perform regularly in a duo. On the program: Mozart's Sonata for two pianos in D major, K. 448/375 A Ravel's La Valse (arr. for two pianos) Arensky's Suite No. 1 for two pianos, Op. 15 and Rachmaninoff's Suite No. 1 (Fantasy) for two pianos, Op. 5. As an encore, the duo performs ‘Romance' from Rachmaninoff's Suite No. 2 for two pianos, Op. 17, followed by ‘Overture' from Nikolai Kapustin's Sinfonietta, Op. 49. Leonard Slatkin conducts the Orchestre national de Lyon in a concert recorded at the Auditorium de Lyon in France, 2013. The concert is a tribute to the organ of the Maurice-Ravel Auditorium, which was made by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll. The program features three works which premiered on exactly the same organ: Camille Saint-Saëns' Cyprès et Lauriers and Symphony No. 3 and Poulenc's Concerto for Organ, Timpani and Strings. Soloist is Vincent Warnier.
For this exceptional recital, recorded in 2019 at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Camille (cello) and Julie Berthollet (violin) are accompanied by pianist Guillaume Vincent and the Ensemble Appassionato under the direction of Mathieu Herzog. Young Venezuelan conductor Glass Marcano is a rising star. Having played in various local youth and symphony orchestras as a violinist, her first experience conducting an ensemble followed in 2012. In September 2020, she won the Orchestra Prize at La Maestra Competition – the first orchestra direction contest for women – held in Paris. In this concert, recorded at Opéra de Tours in February 2021, Marcano leads the Orchestre Symphonique Région Centre-Val de Loire/Tours in performances of two Romantic masterpieces. The program opens with Ludwig van Beethoven's Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 61, featuring Stéphanie-Marie Degand as the soloist. This piece is one of the most important works in its genre. The program concludes with Georges Bizet's 1855 Symphony in C major, written when the composer was only 17 years old.

‘A Descent into the Maelström' (1841) is American writer Edgar Allan Poe's short story of two fishermen caught in torrents raging between the mountainous islands of Lofoten, inside the Arctic Circle of northern Norway. After a treacherous whirlpool drags their boat down, only one of them survives. American composer Philipp Glass based his choral work for the Australian Dance Theatre on this story. The piece was performed at the Adelaide Festival of Arts in 1986. Beacon Isle Films recorded an arrangement of Glass's work for symphony orchestra, performed by the Arctic Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir conducted by Tim Weiss. Soprano Berit Norbakken Solset is the soloist. The Artic Philharmonic Orchestra is the world's youngest and northernmost professional orchestral institution, presenting circa 150 performances and concerts each year. This 2019 recording was made against the backdrop of Lofoten's spectacular landscape: the very surroundings that inspired Poe's story.
Swiss conductor Philippe Jordan and the Orchestre de l'Opéra national de Paris recorded all of Ludwig van Beethoven's symphonies in 2014-2015. In this program, maestro Jordan presents Beethoven's final symphony: Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125. He conducts the Orchestre and Choeurs de l'Opéra national de Paris and four vocal soloists Ricarda Merbeth (soprano), Daniela Sindram (mezzosoprano), Robert Dean Smith (tenor), and Günther Groissböck (bass). Beethoven composed his last Symphony when his hearing had all but gone, between 1822 and 1824. Symphony No. 9 is the longest and most ambitious of Beethoven's symphonies. Most striking is the piece's finale movement, which includes a choir and four vocal soloists singing a setting of Friedrich Schiller's poem ‘An die Freude' (Ode to Joy). This performance was recorded at Opéra Bastille in Paris, France, in 2015.

Venezuelan pianist Gabriela Montero is accompanied by the Youth Orchestra of the Americas conducted by Carlos Miguel Prieto. On the program are Maurice Ravel's Piano Concerto in G Major, as well as two of Montero's own works: the “Latin Concerto” and Improvisations. The performance took place in one of the world's most beautiful concert halls, the Teatro del Lago in Frutillar, located in the middle of the Patagonian plains. The concert hall, which opened its doors in 2010, stands on the banks of Chile's second-largest lake overlooking a volcano that is capped with snow the entire year. In an accompanying interview, Montero speaks about composing, improvising, and performing works of her own alongside those of others. She discusses her home country of Venezuela, where she no longer performs for political reasons.

The concert opens with Sergei Prokofiev's Overture on Hebrew Themes, Op. 34. After this, Thomas Zehetmair stars as solo violinist in Prokofiev Violin Concerto No. 2, Op. 63. The second part of the concert is features music by Igor Stravinsky. On the program is music composed for the ballet 'Jeu de cartes' (1937) and the Firebird Suite, No. 2 (1919). 'Jeu de cartes' is one of Stravinsky's neo-classical works and consists of three parts ('deals'). The Firebird Suite, No. 2 is based on the music from the ballet of the same name, which was written for Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes and premiered in Paris in 1910.
Les Dissonances is a collective of artists founded by violinist David Grimal in 2004. The conductorless ensemble consists of musicians from the most prestigious European orchestras, international soloists, and young talents. In this performance, Les Dissonances' string quartet – consisting of David Grimal (violin), Hans Peter Hofmann (violin), David Gaillard (viola), and Xavier Phillips (cello) – performs Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's String Quartet No. 19 in C major, K. 465, ‘Dissonance' (Op. 10 No. 6). The String Quartet is the last in the set of six quartets that were dedicated to Joseph Haydn. Written between 1782 and 1785, these are also known as the Haydn Quartets (Op. 10). String Quartet No. 19 is remarkable for its slow, dissonant introduction, giving the piece its nickname. This ominous passage suddenly gives way to the bright Allegro in C major. This performance was recorded at Opéra Comique in Paris, France, in 2015.

English-French pianist David Levy performs Dmitri Shostakovich's 24 Preludes and Fugues, Op. 87. The work is a set of twenty-four pieces for piano, one in each of the major and minor keys of the chromatic scale. Each piece is in two parts: a prelude followed by a fugue. The composer was doubtlessly inspired by J. S. Bach's famous The Well-Tempered Clavier (BWV 846-893), a collection of forty-eight preludes and fugues published in two books. A panel member at Leipzig's Bach competition, Shostakovich was deeply inspired by Russian pianist Tatiana Nikolayeva's performance of Bach's 48 Preludes and Fugues. Shostakovich wrote these pieces between the autumn of 1950 and February 1951, dedicating them to Nikolayeva, who agreed to perform the Leningrad premiere in December 1952. David Levy's performance was recorded at the Budapest Music Center, Hungary, in September 2023.

Sergei Prokofiev based his ballet ‘Romeo and Juliet' on William Shakespeare's famous play of the same name, telling the story of two young lovers from the feuding families Montague and Capulet. Acclaimed French choreographer Jean-Christophe Maillot created a distinctive choreography of the ballet in 1996, which has been performed to great success the world over. In his production, Maillot interprets Romeo and Juliet not as a social conflict or clan warfare governed by a strict code of honor, but as a tale of accidental tragedy that leads to the death of children more concerned with the path of love than that of hatred. This 2002 interpretation is performed by the dancers of Les Ballets de Monte Carlo. Chris Roelandt and Bernice Coppieters star in the title roles.
'La Bayadère' is a three-act ballet by the French choreographer Marius Petipa. Set in 19th-century India, 'La Bayadère' tells the sad love story of the noble warrior Solor and his Nikia, a temple dancer or 'bayadère', who is poisoned by her rival, Gamzatti. The ballet features one of the most celebrated scenes of classical ballet, namely 'The Kingdom of the Shades'. In this iconic scene, Solor dreams, under the influence of opium, of reuniting with his beloved Nikia. This production of the ballet features the revised choreography by Vladimir Ponomarev and Vakhtang Chabukiani (1941), and includes dances by Konstantin Sergeyev and Nikolai Zubkovsky. The ballet's music, composed by Ludwig Minkus, is performed by the Mariinsky Orchestra under the direction of Boris Gruzin. Among the performers are Viktoria Tereshkina, Anastasia Matvienko, Vladimir Shklyarov, and Vladimir Ponomarev. This performance was recorded at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia, in July 2014.
