There are pianists who also conduct, and concert masters who lead their orchestra from the violin desk, but a star soprano who coordinates an ensemble while at the same time negotiating the trickiest coloratura singing is something entirely new! This concert opens with the Overture from Rossini's La scala di seta, followed by three concert arias by Mozart: Vado, ma dove? O Dei!, K. 583, Un moto di gioia, K. 579 and Misera, dove son? K. 369. After renditions of György Ligeti's Concert Românesc and Mysteries of the Macabre, the concert closes with Fauré's Pelléas et Mélisande, Op. 80, a suite derived from incidental music.

‘A Descent into the Maelström' (1841) is American writer Edgar Allan Poe's short story of two fishermen caught in torrents raging between the mountainous islands of Lofoten, inside the Arctic Circle of northern Norway. After a treacherous whirlpool drags their boat down, only one of them survives. American composer Philipp Glass based his choral work for the Australian Dance Theatre on this story. The piece was performed at the Adelaide Festival of Arts in 1986. Beacon Isle Films recorded an arrangement of Glass's work for symphony orchestra, performed by the Arctic Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir conducted by Tim Weiss. Soprano Berit Norbakken Solset is the soloist. The Artic Philharmonic Orchestra is the world's youngest and northernmost professional orchestral institution, presenting circa 150 performances and concerts each year. This 2019 recording was made against the backdrop of Lofoten's spectacular landscape: the very surroundings that inspired Poe's story.

On the program are Felix Mendelssohn's Piano Trio No. 1 in D minor, Op. 49 Leoš Janáček's Violin Sonata Franz Schubert's Rondo in A major, D. 951 and Johannes Brahms's Piano Quartet No. 3 in C minor, Op. 60. These performances were recorded on May 4 and June 13, 2021.

Steven D. Bowen) which is based upon music from his famous opera Porgy and Bess (1935). This is followed by the well-known tone poem An American in Paris (1928). After, soprano Claron McFadden joins the orchestra, presenting a selection of Gershwin's classic jazz songs, including ‘The man I love' (1924-27), ‘I got rhythm' (1930), and ‘By Strauss' (1936). She also performs ‘My man's gone now' and ‘Summertime' from Porgy and Bess. The concert ends with Gershwin's celebrated Rhapsody in Blue, with Bart Van Caenegem as featured pianist. This performance was recorded at Concertgebouw Brugge, Belgium, on March 3, 2017.

Swiss conductor Philippe Jordan and the Orchestre de l'Opéra national de Paris recorded all of Ludwig van Beethoven's symphonies in 2014-2015. In this program, Jordan conducts Beethoven's Symphony No. 6 in F major, Op. 68, also known as the Pastoral Symphony. Beethoven wrote the work upon completion of his Symphony No. 5. Both symphonies premiered at the same legendary, all-Beethoven concert on December 22, 1808. Symphony No. 6 consists of five movements, of which the last three are played without a break. Each movement carries a title that suggests a scene from life in the countryside. The joyful atmosphere of the first three movements is interrupted by the violent fourth movement ‘Thunder, Storm', as expressed by the piccolos, brass, and timpani. As the storm recedes at the end of the movement, the tranquility returns in the final movement. This performance was recorded at Opéra Bastille in Paris, France, in 2015.

The Mariinsky Ballet performs 'Anna Karenina', a sweeping two-act ballet choreographed by Alexei Ratmansky. The ballet is based on Lev Tolstoy's 1877 novel that tells the tragic story of the married socialite Anna Karenina and her affair with cavalry officer Count Vronsky. The ballet opens where the novel ends: tormented by despair and loneliness, Anna throws herself under a train, whereupon Count Vronsky discovers his lover's lifeless body. Ratmansky's choreography is set to Rodion Shchedrin's music, which is performed by the Mariinsky Orchestra under the baton of Valery Gergiev. Among the dancers are Ulyana Lopatkina, Victor Baranov, Andrei Yermakov, and Svetlana Ivanova. This performance was recorded at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia, in March 2014.

To transcend the political and ideological divides between their respective countries, Daniel Barenboim, an Argentinian Jew and Israel's most famous pianist and conductor, and Edward Said, a Palestinian philosopher and Christian, created the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, an ensemble of young musicians between the ages of 13 and 26 who have as many Israelis as there are Arabs. Despite this great symbolism, the objectives and ambitions of the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra are first and foremost musical: the political divisions of the Middle East are setting aside the time of the union of these young musical talents which speaks volumes about the power of cultural interaction. This performance delivered to Victoria Hall in Geneva features two famous masterpieces: Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3 and Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5. Les Dissonances is a collective of artists founded by violinist David Grimal in 2004. The conductorless ensemble consists of musicians from the most prestigious European orchestras, international soloists, and young talents. In this performance, Les Dissonances play Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 4 in D major, K. 218. Leading violinist Grimal features as the soloist. With the exception of the first violin concerto, Mozart composed his other four violin concertos in 1775 at a time when he was concertmaster at the Salzburg court. Among his five concertos, Violin Concerto No. 4 is one of the best-known. This performance was recorded at Cité de la Musique, France, in 2014.
