Responding to a request from the D.A., Parker loans out Jane for two weeks to help the overworked prosecutors. Though she doesn't recall a previous two-year stint in the office after law school, her new boss, A.D.A. Alan Roberts, does – especially since they were once romantically involved. After reminding her of the unsolved murder of eighteen-year-old Elena Estrada eight years ago, Alan says that new evidence will allow her to prosecute gardener Stephan Granados for the crime. Meanwhile, when Arlene Bovitz wants to go after a blogger she claims lured her teenaged daughter into spending $10,000 on clothes, Kim gladly takes the case after learning that the lawsuit's target is none other than Stacy. After reviewing the case, Jane calls on Anna Estrada who explains that her daughter was killed while she was on her way to the Malibu home of her friend and recovering alcoholic Nate Persky. Yet, once she reexamines the timeline for the day, Jane discovers that Granados couldn't have been the killer. Upon delving deeper into the D.A.'s files, she finds that Alan buried a witness in order to protect Nate from being charged with murder. Meanwhile, after Stacy admits that she blogged favorably about items that Pacific Holdings gave her for free, her lawyer, Grayson, negotiates a settlement that will get Arlene's money back. But when the company demands that she also take down her blog, Stacy balks. Convinced that he's the killer, Jane calls in Nate for questioning without telling Alan. Over his father's protests, Nate confesses to Elena's murder, but as she watches the young man signing the confession, Jane realizes that he couldn't have done it because the killer was left-handed. After pressing Nate about why he confessed to a murder he didn't commit, Jane discovers that he has been unwittingly protecting the real killer – his dad Warren. Finally, as Jane has the elder Persky arrested and then demands that Alan resign to avoid having his mishandling of the case expose
