喬因為生活窮困潦倒，又身材壯碩，想靠自己身體賺錢，他離開了故鄉，來到紐約淘金。在街上頻送秋波，但沒有女人上鉤，好不容易遇上一個女人，兩人私開房間幽會，事後才知她是妓女，喬把口袋裡的錢全部掏出來，才把她打發走。 喬灰心喪氣，在酒吧喝酒時結識拉曹，拉曹罹患嚴重肺病，將喬最後的十塊錢也騙走了，然後帶喬去見一個專為同性戀者拉皮條的人。喬知道真相後暴跳如雷，去找拉曹算帳，不料拉曹已病得奄奄一息，喬只好一直陪著拉曹。 拉曹抱病為喬找顧客，均未成功﹐而自己的病情越來越嚴重，幾乎不能動彈，他央求喬帶他到陽光充足的南方。喬這時候總算找到一個女顧客，賺到一點錢，恰巧那個同性戀者又來糾纏，喬一怒之下使出恫嚇手段，把對方的錢弄到手。 喬和拉曹一起搭乘去邁阿密的長途汽車。喬覺得紐約一行無聊透頂，那裡不是天堂，一路上，喬禁不住遐思起邁阿密來﹕陽光明媚、大海湛藍、雪白沙灘，說不定慷慨大方的有錢女人多得很哩…… 但是就在抵達祂心目中的樂園之前，可憐的拉曹在自己的座位上斷了氣。喬偎依著拉曹的尸首，失神地望著窗外的邁阿密景色…… 故事改編自美國作家詹姆士李歐赫林漢（James Leo Herlihy）1965年出版的同名小說。兩大男主角強沃特和達斯汀霍夫曼以其精湛演技，共同獲第42屆奧斯卡最佳男主角提名，強沃特更以本片榮獲第27屆金球獎最佳新人獎。
