搭輪船回鄉的退役軍人詹姆士，不甘屈就於工廠一成不變的生活，離鄉背景追求成為建築工程師的夢想。他踏遍天涯卻屢次碰壁，身無分文之際，無意間捲入一樁搶劫案而含冤入獄，成為鎖鏈囚幫的一員。酷刑日復一日，詹姆士一心等待逃亡的機會，在獄友的協助下，他順利重返社會。無奈過去已蒙上陰影，絕望仍埋伏在暗處驅之不散，等待再次反噬。
