冷面笑匠沃爾特．馬修難得主演的一部鬥智動作片。劇情描述以羅伯特．肖為首的四名歹徒洗劫紐約市的地下鐵，劫持十八個乘客作人質，威脅市政府在一小時內交一百萬美元贖金，否則開始殺害人質。沃爾特．馬修飾演的警長一邊代表市府與歹徒周旋，另一邊又跟地鐵公司的職員怒目向相，使危機隨著時間過去而升高。不料在四個歹徒得手之後，警長竟憑巧計識破了其中一名劫匪的身份。導演約瑟夫．沙根特以簡明俐落手法交代整個複雜的騎劫過程，緊張氣氛掌握得宜，頗有高潮起伏的感覺。不過編導專注敘事而弱於寫人，對幾個劫匪的背景刻劃得不夠，故未能產生正反對峙的強烈張力。倒是警長帶領日本人參觀地下鐵中心的一段拍來別具妙趣。
