萬裡（愛德華·羅賓遜Edward G. Robinson 飾）是一位學識淵博的高望重大學教授。在當地的俱樂部裡，懸掛著一張美女的畫像，萬里和其他男人一樣，被畫中的美人深深的吸引著。有一天，正當萬里站在畫像前心猿意馬之時，發現畫中的那個美人，竟然活生生的出現在了他的眼前，她的名字叫愛麗絲（瓊·貝內特Joan Bennett 飾）。 在愛麗絲的邀請下，萬裡來到了她的家中，兩人開了一瓶酒，準備度過一個浪漫的夜晚。可是，就在這個節骨眼上，愛麗絲的男友破門而入，對著萬里大發雷霆。扭打之中，萬裡失手殺死了愛麗絲的男友，這個夜晚發生的種種事情，毀了萬裡的一生。
