Gilbert(強尼戴普飾)在父親自殺、哥哥離家出走之後一肩扛起家計，並照顧母親Momma﹝Darlene Cates飾﹞、18歲的智障弟弟Arnie(李奧納多狄卡皮歐飾)，還有個總是很害羞、不知所措的妹妹Ellen﹝Mary Kate Schellhardt飾﹞，所剩無幾的閒暇時間裡，Gilbert就會修補家裡那棟破爛不堪的農舍，或是到雜貨店打工、和Bobby﹝克斯賓葛洛佛飾﹞、Tucker﹝約翰萊利飾﹞廝混，複雜卻又一成不變的日子過了不知道多久，突然之間，Becky﹝茱莉葉路易絲飾﹞出現了，她帶著愛流浪的奶奶到處遊歷，並教會Gilbert如何對自己好一點，她闖進了他一手架構好的家庭生活，更打斷他和Betty﹝瑪麗史汀柏格飾﹞之間的不倫戀...
