八年前，自海軍陸戰隊受訓完畢的卡麥倫坡（尼可拉斯凱吉飾）為了保護剛懷孕的妻子免於小混混的騷擾，導致過失殺人被判了十年徒刑。 在獄中表現良好的他，終於在女兒八歲生日當天獲得假釋，卡麥倫坡希望能親自將生日禮物送到女兒手中，因此要求典獄官讓他登上空中監獄，以節省舟車往返的時間。 但這踏空中監獄正巧搭載一批全美最殘暴兇狠的犯人，準備運送到另一個新落成的高度保全監獄去。 聯邦探員（約翰庫查克飾）為這踏危險任務準備許久。沒想到飛機飛上天沒多久，罪犯首領外號'病毒'的葛森（約翰麥可維奇飾）就策動其他同夥，奪下飛機。聯邦調查局在無路可退下，決定打下這架飛機-反正他們都是社會人渣。 但意外捲入這場風波的卡麥倫坡又該如何為自己脫險，親自將禮物送給從未謀面的女兒？
