患有嚴重失眠症的越戰退伍軍人崔維斯，在紐約市以開夜班計程車維生，夜夜目睹大都會的腐敗與黑暗。崔維斯是一個對社會適應不良的男子，平時喜歡看色情電影，卻又對城市中的墮落與罪惡深惡痛絕。他試圖追求總統候選人參議員哈瑞斯的助選人員貝茜，卻在第一次約會時帶她去看色情電影，貝茜從此不肯再理他。 同時，崔維斯結識了雛妓艾瑞絲，想要幫助她脫離皮條客和情人的掌控，勸她回家繼續學業，但卻徒勞無功。深感無力與挫折的崔維斯，買了四把手槍，自命為掃除人渣的復仇天使，展開一連串瘋狂的暴力行為。他先是跑到參議員的競選集會上，試圖刺殺哈瑞斯未果；後來又獨闖妓女戶，血拼皮條客，殺死控制艾瑞絲的一幫惡徒。 在這個瘋狂的城市中，受害者變成了加害者，崔維斯能夠找到最終的救贖嗎……
