西部片大師約翰．福特導演的經典作，也是約翰．韋恩首部建立巨星地位的代表作，主要情節取自莫泊桑的著名短篇小說《羊脂球》，描述八個不同的人物共同乘一輪馬車前往勞司堡，由於其中一名是妓女達拉斯，頗引起其他乘客的議論。途中遇到逃獄出來報仇的林哥小子加入了他們的旅程，在快將到達目的地時，驛馬車遇上了印第安人的圍攻，幾經艱險之後終於獲得騎兵隊解圍。到了勞司堡，林哥小子以一敵三擊斃了仇人，同車的警長法外施仁讓他帶著達拉斯前往邊界的農場展開新生活。由於角色個性鮮明，演出精彩，使這一部探討危機下的人性關係的影片顯得戲味濃郁。福特影片中堪稱特色的西部景觀和精彩的紅番圍攻馬車場面，自此更成為西部片的招牌。演員卡兒托佛、托馬斯．米切爾和喬治．班克勞夫的演出都很出色。其中扮演醉酒醫生的托馬斯．米切爾更奪得奧斯卡最佳男配角金像獎。此外，本片亦獲得最佳配樂金像獎。
