1949年的開羅。考古學家、戰爭時曾擔任牧師的梅林（斯特蘭•斯卡斯加德 Stellan Skarsgård 飾）接到一份工作，將前往肯亞參與發掘一座五世紀的教堂，委託人瞭解梅林在聖神像領域的專長，要求他取得一個蘇美爾風格的惡魔像。梅林來到肯亞，與教廷派來的神父匯合，才得知教廷對這座五世紀的教堂一無所知，而這座教堂本身充滿了疑點。在發掘隊醫生莎拉（伊沙貝拉•斯科魯普科 Izabella Scorupco 飾）等人的介紹下，梅林發現整個發掘過程也充滿詭異現象，考古學家貝松在發掘中發瘋，而貝松畫出的圖畫，分明與梅林看到的惡魔像如出一轍。同時，發掘營地的孩子出現了被“惡魔觸碰”的狀況，渾身抽搐卻能操縱土狼。梅林等人似乎在惡魔的詛咒中越陷越深……
