電影《悲慘世界》取自法國文豪雨果著作之名，劇情卻取材法國2005年10月時，發生在巴黎近郊城市蒙費梅伊市的真實暴動事件。當時有2名北非裔男孩為躲避警察緝捕而遭到電死，引起巴黎民眾抗議怒火，爆發多場暴動及焚車事件，時間長達三週、難以停歇。終究冰凍三尺非一日之寒，該事件一夕引爆了法國積怨已久的種族、平等、階級及教育等問題，不僅法國為此付出嚴重代價，時任總統席哈克為平息暴動，甚至不得不宣佈全法國進入緊急狀態。 本片提出現在法國仍有貧富差距、種族歧視、執法暴力等社會問題，且在過去數十年來從未受政府重視，終究導致抗暴事件如烈火燎原、一發不可收拾，與150年前文豪雨果的名著【悲慘世界】核心概念如出一轍，因此借其名諷刺當今社會。
