梅格•阿特曼（朱迪•福斯特饰）刚刚与丈夫离婚，她带着11岁的女儿莎拉新搬到一个古怪的房子——里面暗藏了一个密室，密室里有16个摄录机，8个监视器，还有一条不与外面的线路连接的电话线，以及一道坚不可摧的房门。没有料想过有朝一日会用上这间密室的母女俩，第一夜就遭遇了不速之客——房子的建造者伯罕姆、前屋主的孙子朱尼尔、以及他请来的帮手劳尔。他们想要朱尼尔祖父的大笔遗产，随着他们步步逼近梅格藏身的密室，一场斗智斗勇的游戏开始了，而患有哮喘的莎拉，能不能在这场斗争中存活下来？
