由著名剧作家多尔顿·特朗博执导，讲述第一次世界大战期间，美国青年强尼出征欧洲战场受重伤，他的脸部，四肢都被炮弹炸坏了。而他只有代号“407”。但他还有清楚的意识，完整的记忆力，他被送入后方的陆军医院。他在病床上想着他的爱人、双亲、妹妹们。新来的护士是一个温柔的女性，强尼与她交谈则用头敲枕头，发出电报似的信号。但随着护士的离去，一切希望都没有的407躺在黑暗里心里叫着“我不能这样活下去”……
