James常常向Thomas自夸是肥控制员最爱的火车头，所以常常被分配到较好的工作。由于Henry发生意外，不能如期运送卡车到对岸，James便取笑地说，他会代替Henry到对岸大冒险。于是Thomas翌日便很早起床私自带着卡车出发到对岸。肥控制员并不介意，高兴地重新改组工作，让James在Thomas的支线工作。而James有点不高兴。 可是，运送卡车的工作未如Thomas所想般简单，他更在对岸迷路了。在旅途上，他不但遇到一些他从未见过的实验火车头，甚至被困在钢铁厂里工作。由于与Thomas失去了联络，James便出发对岸尝试寻找Thomas。但Thomas在James抵达前已顺利逃出，反而James却被困在钢铁厂里！现在是Thomas及实验火车头的抉择，究竟争宠还是友谊重要呢？
