本片改编自小说，描述一个在英国经商的美国人克里夫被怀疑陷害他的同事詹森鲁特，虽然他是无辜的，但却指证了另外一个无辜的同事海斯，海斯被送进了监狱，克里夫此时把巨额资金投资到商业运行中，克里夫的妻子玛莎开始怀疑自己的丈夫才是真正的幕后主谋，于是为了把找出指证自己丈夫的罪证，玛莎在寻找过程中经历了种种悚然的警告，一方面她爱他丈夫，一方面又无法容忍自己丈夫是凶手，但这位美国商人，到底是不是凶手呢？
