1865年，总统林肯遭到刺杀，杀手布斯（弗朗西斯·麦克唐纳 Francis McDonald 饰）在逃跑的过程中摔伤了腿，闯进了乡村医生塞缪尔（沃纳·巴克斯特 Warner Baxter 饰）的家中。善良的塞缪尔接纳了布斯，还帮他疗伤，哪知道布斯临走之前将自己的靴子偷偷留在了塞缪尔家中，第二天，警察登门，将这只靴子作为证据，一口咬定塞缪尔就是刺杀总统的帮凶。 就这样，塞缪尔锒铛入狱，面临着终身监禁的重刑，他被关进了大名鼎鼎的鲨鱼岛监狱，这座监狱建造在孤岛之上，为了防止犯人越狱，监狱周围的水域中养满了鲨鱼。塞缪尔是被临时军事法庭定罪的，这也就意味着布斯依然拥有被无罪释放的可能。但重新审判是有条件的，那就是布斯必须从鲨鱼岛监狱中逃出来。
