根据真实事件改编的美国内战电影。故事背景是1863年春天，北军将领格兰特对无法攻占维克斯堡感到苦恼，于是派遣骑兵队进攻密西西比州的纽顿车站，切断南军的补给线。负责领军的马罗上校在战前是设计这条铁路的人，随行军官则各有不同的心理动机，其中肯代尔少校是有良心的医生，他对战争的看法正好跟粗暴的马罗互相对立。途中，骑兵队在南方女子汉娜的农地上扎营，不料她却刺探军情，马罗遂将她逮捕，其后并对纽顿车站展开猛烈的攻击。
