威尔弗里德（拉尔夫·理查德森 Ralph Richardson 饰）是伦敦知名的辩护律师，最近因为心脏出现了问题，而被迫留在家中卧床修养。某日，律师梅林带来了一位名叫沃尔的委托人，沃尔遇到了大麻烦，希望法力无边的威尔弗里德能够帮助他，这让无聊的快要发霉的威尔弗里德顿时来 了精神。 原来，沃尔结识了一位非常富有的女人，这位女士十分欣赏威尔弗里德的才华，甚至在自己的遗嘱上写下了沃尔的名字。然而，之后没多久，这位女士就惨遭杀害，即将继承她的遗产的沃尔自然成为了警方头号怀疑的对象。唯一能够证明沃尔清白的，是他的糟糠之妻克里斯汀。 1982年版的《控方证人》，不是经典的1957版。
