史马哥（胡金铨 饰）是一名服装设计师，一天，他拿出了自己的得意作品，向妇科医生叶德梅（林黛 饰）征求意见，叶德梅并没有仔细的看过史马哥的作品，而是心不在焉的随口提出了批评的意见，这让史马哥感到非常的不满，在心中的小本本上记下了仇。一天，叶德梅准备出席一场盛大的宴会，于是找到了史马哥，请他帮自己设计礼服，这可让史马哥找到了报仇雪恨的机会，他故意设计了一件奇丑无比的小丑装，让叶德梅在宴会上颜面失尽。最终，史马哥意识到了自己这一行为的荒唐，选择向叶德梅道歉，两人也因此加深了对彼此的了解，渐渐越走越近坠入了爱河。
