本片分为四个故事：《黑发》居住在京都的武士（三國連太郎 饰）厌倦了贫苦的生活，他抛弃妻子（新珠三千代 饰），与一个贵族小姐（渡辺美佐子 饰）结婚。然而现任妻子的冷酷让武士怀念起前妻的温柔贤淑，他再次与前妻相遇，结果却出人意料；《雪女》狂风暴雪的一日，青年（仲代達矢 饰）在山上邂逅美丽的雪女（岸恵子 饰）。雪女爱慕青年，饶他不死，但青年不得将这次相遇告知外人；《无耳芳一的故事》盲僧芳一（中村賀津雄 饰）的琵琶弹唱连鬼魂也分外欣赏，但经常与鬼接触势必折损阳寿，寺中的长老决定拯救芳一；《茶杯中》武士关内（中村翫右衛門 饰）喝茶时发现茶碗有一个陌生人的面孔，他打破茶碗，却引来了一个不速之客。 本片根据小泉八云同名短篇小说改编，并荣获1965年戛纳电影节评委会特别奖、1966年每日电影最佳艺术指导和最佳摄影两项大奖。
