路易斯·温索普三世是个金融家，他在兰道夫-莫蒂默公爵兄弟公司里有着显赫的地位和优厚的待遇。黑人比利是个流浪汉，为了讨口饭吃，他装扮作残废军人沿街乞讨。一次，比利被警察追捕，情急中躲进了上等俱乐部，不巧撞见了路易斯·温索普，路易斯遂将其交给了警察。莫蒂默公爵兄弟目睹了此事的全过程，兄弟俩对这件事持不同的观点，就命运的问题发生了争执，为了印证他们的话，两人决定以打赌这种形式定输赢：如果条件成熟，比利也可以成为上等人，而温索普同样可沦落到最底层。接下来，莫蒂默兄弟想方设法地将温索普搞臭，使他狼狈不堪，还丢掉了工作和金钱，而接替他的人则是比利。这种巨大的转变将温索普和比利弄得莫名其妙，洋相出尽后才发现了事情的真相。最后，温索普和比利团结起来报复了莫蒂默兄弟。
