中国青年程桓（理查德·巴塞尔梅斯 Richard Barthelmess 饰）远赴巴黎，希望能够在异国他乡传授佛教教义。哪知道理想丰满现实残酷，抑郁不得志的程桓不仅荒废了事业，还沾染上了鸦片，整日生活在颓废沮丧之中。 一次偶然中，程桓邂逅了名为露丝（丽莲·吉许 Lillian Gish 饰）的美丽女孩。露丝有着极为凄惨的身世，她的父亲巴汀（唐纳德·克里斯普 Donald Crisp 饰）是一名个性凶残的酒鬼，常在喝得酩酊大醉之后对露丝大打出手。同样悲惨的遭遇让两颗孤独的心越靠越近，终于，不堪忍受父亲折磨的露丝离家出走，程桓收留了她。好景不长，巴汀很快就找到了露丝的踪迹，将她强行带回了家，等待着露丝的，将是又一轮如同狂风暴雨一般的折磨。
