에이스라는 이름의 작은 레이싱카가 소도어 섬에 찾아와 세상을 보고 싶다는 토마스의 꿈을 부추긴다. 토마스가 사장님께 온 세상을 돌고 오는 첫 번째 기관차가 되면 어떻겠냐고 묻자 사장님은 그것이 토마스 자신의 이야기인지도 모른 채 그렇게만 되면 대단한 일이 될 거라고 대답한다. 사장님이 토마스가 사라진 것을 알게 됐을 때는, 토마스는 이미 다섯 대륙으로 향하는 대장정을 떠난 뒤였다. 사막을 건너고, 정글을 지나고, 위험한 산을 넘으면서 토마스는 한번도 보지 못한 광경들을 보고 케냐 출신 탱크 기관차인 니아를 포함해 많은 새 친구들을 만난다. 그리고 토마스는 니아를 통해 진정한 우정의 의미와 누구에게나 친구의 도움이 필요하다는 교훈을 얻는다.
