성지 이스라엘을 여행하던 고대 언어학 교수 하셀(Harvey/Herschel: 더들리 무어 분)은 우연히 바람에 이끌려 동굴 속으로 들어가 무려 3000년 전에 만들어진 파피루스 두루마리를 발견한다. 300년전 파라오의 명령으로 아기들이 사라질 무렵 두명의 아기가 나일강에 버려진다. 그래서 하나는 모세로 또 하나는 몰락한 가문의 아들 하세로 자라게 되는데, 신은 두 사람에게 각기 다른 삶을 살도록 예언하고 있다. 불쌍한 조각가 하셀. 정처없는 여행길에서 강도에게 뜯기고 여자드르에게 곤욕을 치루면서 신의 뜻을 쫓지만.
