1939년, 나치 독일군이 체코를 점령하자 무기 발명가인 보마쉬 박사는 영국으로 피신한다. 박사의 딸 안나도 아버지와 합류하려 했지만, 공항으로 출발하기 직전 독일군에게 체포되어 수용소로 끌려가고 만다. 아버지의 행방을 묻는 나치에게 협조하지 않던 안나는 수용소에서 만난 칼과 가까워지고, 둘은 의기투합해 수용소를 탈출하는 데 성공해 런던으로 간다. 아버지의 행방을 찾으려던 안나를 칼이 돕는데, 안나는 꿈에도 칼의 정체를 의심하지 않는다. 2차 세계 대전 발발 시기를 배경으로 한 캐롤 리드의 스릴러. 리드와 작업한 작품으로 스타 대열에 올랐던 명배우 마거릿 록우드가 캐롤 리드와 작업한 마지막 작품이기도 하다.
