철도 노동자 피에르는 홀로 두 아들을 키운다. 둘째 루이는 학업에 충실한 반면, 첫째 퓌스는 점점 극우 사상에 빠져들며 가족과 멀어진다. 피에르는 아들을 붙잡으려 하지만 폭력과 극단적 신념에 물든 퓌스는 걷잡을 수 없이 변해가고, 결국 가족을 덮친 비극 앞에서 그는 무력감을 느낀다.
