뉴욕의 리버티 섬에 인간의 형상을 한 우주선(에디 머피 분)이 착륙한다. 소금 고갈로 에너지 위기를 겪고 있는 닐 행성을 구해줄 바닷물 흡수기를 찾아서 지구로 온 것이다. 1인치 크기의 대원들에 의해 조종되는 우주선은 도시 곳곳을 탐색하다가 초등학생 조쉬와 살고 있는 싱글맘 지나(엘리자베스 뱅크스 분)의 자동차에 부딪히고 만다. 이 사건을 계기로 '데이브 밍챙'이란 이름을 갖게 된 우주선 캡틴(에디 머피 분)은 지나를 사랑하게 되고, 지구인들의 생활과 문화에 빠져든다. 이에 넘버 2가 우주선의 통제권을 장악하고 지구를 위협하는 임무를 수행하려고 나서는데...
