제드는 딸 엘리메이와 장모를 부양하고 사는 홀아비이다. 그는 어느날 토끼 사냥을 하다가 엄청난 규모의 유전을 발견하게 된다. 10억달러라는 거액의 돈을 받고 한 석유회사에 이 유전을 판 제드는 비버리힐스로 이사를 온다. 산골을 떠나지 않으려는 장모와 딸, 조카 제스린과 함께.. 한편, 제드의 재산을 자기 은행에 유치시키려 하는 비버리은행의 드리스델은 자기 옆집에 호화저택을 구해놓는다. 그러나 그의 여비서 해서웨이의 실수로 제드는 도둑으로 몰리게 된다. 제드는 오히려 그녀의 책임감을 칭찬하며 자기네 집안일을 맡긴다. 어느날 제드앞에 한 여자가 나타난다. 그녀는 드리스델은행 직원인 타일러의 정부 로라. 로라는 엘리메이의 가정교사로 가장해 제드의 마음을 사로잡는데 성공, 결국 그의 청혼을 받아내기에 이른다. 그러나 타일러와 로라의 대화를 엿들은 할머니가 결혼식을 반대하자 두사람은 할머니를 납치, 정신병원에 감금시킨다. 할머니가 실종되자 해서웨이는 명탐정을 통해 로라가 사깃꾼임을 알게 되고, 할머니를 구해낸다. 결혼을 중지시키기 위해 뛰어가는 두 사람. 성혼 선언문을 낭독하는 순간, 거대한 트럭이 식장에 난입, 두 사기꾼은 즉각 경찰에 체포되고 제드일가는 홀가분한 마음으로 친척들과 함께 한바탕 신나는 파티를 벌린다.
