중국의 선교사 챙 후안은 부처의 가르침을 서구에 전파하기 위해 런던으로 온다. 포부는 원대했으나, 그가 직접 마주한 런던의 현실은 그 가르침을 받아들이기에는 더없이 피폐하다. 선교는 커녕 무력감과 아편에 취해 하릴없는 나날을 보내던 중 그는 작은 가게를 열게 된다. 어느 날 그의 가게 창문에 작고 아름다운 소녀의 모습이 비친다. 소녀는 권투 선수인 아버지의 폭력에 시달리며 힘겹게 하루하루를 버티는 루시 버로우다. 챙 후안은 한눈에 루시에게 빠져든다.
