워싱턴 DC 종합병원에서 인턴으로 일하던 성형외과 전공의 젊은 청년 벤(Dr. Benjamin Stone: 마이클 J. 폭스 분)은 비버리힐스의 유명한 성형외과에 취직이 되어 빨간 56년도형 콜쉐어의 스피드스터를 몰고 대륙횡단의 길을 떠난다. 돈과 늘씬한 미녀가 기다리는 비버리힐스 생각에 신나게 차를 몰아대는 벤이 그만 실수로 길을 잘못 들어 어느 시골 마을에 들어선다. 이 마을은 자랑할 것라고는 호박밖에 없어서 미 남부의 호박의 수도라는 별명이 붙은 싸우스 케롤라인의 '그레이'라는 작은 마을이다. 벤은 마을에 들어서자 한가롭게 거니는 소떼를 피하려다가 그는 그만 남의 집 울타리를 무수는 바람에 재판을 받게 된다.
