지적이며 좋은 환경에서 자란 맥스(Max Baron: 제임스 스파이더 분)는 2년전에 사랑하는 아내 제니를 교통사고로 잃었다. 그 후 다른 여자들은 거들떠보지도 않고, 오직 제니 생각에만 젖어 지내는 27세의 유능한 청년이다. 친구 닐(Neil: 제이슨 알렉산더 분)의 총각파티 날, 맥스는 파티가 끝난 후 술집에 들렀다가, 몇 시간 전에 햄버거 문제로 한바탕 설전을 벌였던 식당 '하얀 궁전'의 웨이트리스 노라(Nora Baker: 수잔 서랜든 분)와 우연히 다시 마주치게 된다. 노라는 아들 챨리를 술과 마약중독으로 잃고 남편과도 헤어진 채, 인생을 포기하고 밑바닥 인생을 살아가는 43살 먹은 여자. 두 사람은 술잔을 주고 받다가 술에 취하게 된다. 노라를 집에 태워주러 갔다가 노라의 유혹에 하룻밤을 같이 보내게 되는 맥스. 처음에 노라를 하찮게 생각했던 맥스는 자신도 모르게 노라의 퇴폐적이면서도 묘한 매력에 끌리는 것을 발견한다. 결국 맥스는 다시 노라를 찾아가게되고, 16년이란 나이 차이에도 불구하고 서로에게 아주 소중한 존재가 된다.
