해리 휠러를 두목으로 한 갱단이 은행을 습격해 21만달러를 훔쳐달아나다 경비원을 쏜채 다시 도망간다. 형사 폴 셰리던은 휠러의 정부 리오나와 좋은 사이가 되는데 성공해 동료 형사인 릭, 퍼디와 함께 그녀의 아파트 앞에서 숨어 기다린다. 그날밤 아파트를 나선 리오나를 미행한 폴은 그녀가 자신의 아파트로 들어가는 것을 보고 놀란다. 리오나는 폴이 형사임을 알았으며, 휠러를 죽이고 돈을 빼앗은 뒤 함께 떠나자고 하지만 폴은 거절한다. 한편 잠복중인 릭은 리오나의 이웃 앤에게 마음을 빼앗긴다.
