인기 햄버거 더 빅 원(The Big One)의 냉동 패티에서 오염물질이 검출됐다! 더 빅 원을 공급하는 미키의 패스트푸드 체인점 마케팅 담당 중역 돈 헨더슨은 조사를 위해 미 중부에 위치한 공장으로 향하고, 거기에서 체인점 아르바이트생 앰버를 만난다. 앰버는 대학 진학을 꿈꾸는 평범한 여고생. 넉넉치 않은 살림에 학비를 벌어보고자 학업과 아르바이트를 병행 중이다. 어느 날 파티에 참석한 앰버는 환경운동을 펼치는 젊은이들을 만나게 되고, 그들의 뜻에 이끌려 운동에 가담하게 된다. 젊은이들이 행동 목표로 삼은 곳은 수많은 소떼들이 갇혀 있는 거대한 농장. 그 근처에는 더 빅 원의 냉동 패티가 생산되는 대규모 공장과 도살장이 있다. 이 곳 직원인 라울과 실비아는 금실 좋은 부부로, 아메리칸 드림의 실현을 위해 불법 이민자 낙인을 감수하면서도 열심히 일한다. 하지만 열악한 환경은 뜻밖의 사고를 불러 일으키고, 이들 부부는 걷잡을 수 없는 불행의 소용돌이 속에 휘말리게 되는데.
