텍사스 오스틴에 사는 천하태평 낙관론자인 서푼짜리 날사기꾼 웬델은 사랑스런 애인 도린의 간청에도 불구하고 친구인 레이에스와 함께 텍사스 멕시코 국경지역에서 불법으로 미국에 넘어오는 농장노동자들에게 가짜 신분증을 만들어 팔아먹고 산다. 어느 날, 그에게 생각지도 못한 위기가 찾아왔다. 웬델은 함정수사에 걸려 옥살이를 하게 되는데 그는 교도서 에서도 흑백 통합을 주도하는 등 아주 즐겁게 살아간다. 하지만 웬델에게 한결같았던 연인 도린은 항상 자신을 뒷전으로 생각하는 웬델의 행동에 지쳐 그의 곁을 떠나기로 결심 하는데… 그녀가 떠난 후 오는 엄청난 휴우증!
