잡지 기자이지만 도박을 즐기는 빌과 삼류 도박꾼 찰리는 한 도박클럽에서 만나게 되고, 둘은 함께 시간을 보내면서 점점 가까워지는 것은 물론 빌은 찰리의 삶을 흡수하게 된다. 도박을 하면 할수록 빌의 빚을 늘어나고, 그는 더 큰 돈을 따기 위해 찰리와 함께 리노로 향한다. 극 중에서 빌이 찰리에게 카지노와 경마장이 같은 선상에 있다고 이야기하듯이, 은 알트만 감독이 보여주고자 하는 제어되지 않은 혼돈의 세계를 다루고 있다. 알트만 감독의 다른 작품에 비해 비교적 덜 알려진 이 버디 무비는 과 함께 폴 토마스 앤더슨 감독의 의 호아킨 피닉스와 조슈 브롤린을 연상시킨다.
