제2차 세계 대전이 끝날 무렵, 영국의 폭격기 조종사인 피터는 추락하는 비행기 속에서 죽음을 맞을 위기에 처한다. 죽음을 앞둔 피터는 지상에 있는 미국인 여성 무선사 준과 마지막 대화를 하게 되고 그녀의 목소리에서 사랑을 느끼지만 비행기에서 맨몸으로 뛰어내리는 선택을 한다. 하지만 피터가 정신을 차렸을 때 그는 무사히 생명을 건진 상태, 약간의 뇌 손상 외에는 별탈이 없다. 게다가 우연히 준과 마주쳐 사랑에 빠지기까지 한다. 하지만 두 사람의 사랑에는 문제가 있었다. 피터는 살아서는 안 되는 운명이었기 때문이다. 그가 살아난 것은 천국의 실수였고 이 사실이 알려지면서 천국에서는 비상이 걸린다. 천국의 사자는 사고를 수습하기 위해 급파되는데..
