메리 힐튼(다이애나 도스 분)은 살인 혐의로 유죄 판결을 받고 교수형을 선고받는다. 영화는 그녀가 감방에서 처형을 기다리는 동안, 범행에 이르게 된 과거의 사건들을 회상하는 형식으로 진행. 메리는 남편과의 불행한 결혼 생활 중, 짐 랭커스터(마이클 크레이그 분)라는 남성을 만나 사랑에 빠진다. 그러나 짐은 그녀를 떠나고, 메리는 그의 새로운 연인인 루시 카펜터를 질투하게 된다. 질투심에 사로잡힌 메리는 루시를 총으로 살해하게 되고, 이로 인해 사형 선고를 받게 된다.
