제2차 세계대전, 인도네시아 자바섬. 무사도 정신을 맹신하는 일본군 대위 요노이는 포로수용소에서 영국군 소령 잭 셀리어스와 마주하게 된다. 사형 직전의 잭을 자신의 수용소로 데려온 요노이는 알 수 없는 매력에 끌리면서도 그의 자유분방한 태도에 끊임없이 갈등한다. 한편, 유일하게 일본어를 구사하는 영국군 중령 존 로렌스는 영국군과 일본군, 양측 사이에서 중재를 시도하지만, 수용소의 분위기는 점점 격화된다. 전쟁의 포로이자 인간으로서의 모습 사이에서 고뇌하는 이들. 과연 전쟁터 한가운데에서 크리스마스의 기적은 일어날 수 있을까?
