제임스 바셋의 방대한 소설에 기초하여, 존 웨인, 커크 더글라스, 헨리 폰다, 패트리샤 닐 등 당대 대스타들이 총출연한 대작 전쟁영화. 흑백으로 촬영되었음에도 불구하고 컬러영화보다 훨씬 격렬하고 선명하면서 세련된 긴장감을 전달하고 있다. 1941년 12월 7일 아침, 록웰 토레이 함장 휘하의 순양함과 윌리엄 맥코넬 중령이 지휘하는 구축함은 일본군의 진주만 폭격에서 가까스로 빠져나온다. 토레이 함장의 지휘 아래 12척의 배로 이루어진 작은 함대는 적의 함대를 격파하는 임무를 수행하기로 한다. 그러나 기습작전은 연료부족과 함장의 계산착오로 인해 실패하고, 함대는 심각한 손상을 입는다. 토레이 함장은 사령관 직에서 해임되고, 토레이의 오랜 친구인 폴 에딩턴이 새롭게 공격임무를 담당하게 된다.
