크리스마스가 되어 선물을 준비해야 했던 그들은 빌딩 높은 곳에 있는 보석가게 사무실을 털게 된다. 보석강도가 '미수'로 끝나고 붙잡힌 그는 감옥에서 생활하게 된다. 감옥에 있 는 동안 인연을 맺은 수사관과 인간적인 우정을 쌓으면서 개과천선하고 새 사람이 되려고 한 다. 그리고 떠나간 아내 대신하여 그를 사랑하는 새로운 여자와 가정을 꾸리면서 어린 딸을 키우며 살아가고자 한다. 그러나 빅터 마츄어는 감옥생활을 하면서 수사관의 끈질긴 설득에 의해서 동료조직을 밀고하게 되고 그로 인하여 리처드 위드마크에게 보복 당할 위험에 처하게 된다.
